This four-part recorded webcast series provides inpatient coders, PPS coordinators, CDIs, and physicians with essential guidelines for accurately assigning IGCs and ICD-10 codes for the IRF-PAI. It offers valuable resources, including CMS guidelines, coding tips, and real-world scenarios. Each session includes a brief quiz to assess competency. Each participant who completes the entire series will receive an IRF Coding Training certificate.

Session 1 (35 minutes):

  • Overview of the IRF PPS and the IRF-PAI
  • Case-mix groups (CMGs)
  • The HIM coder's role
  • Overview of the 60% rule

Session 2 (25 minutes):

  • Define impairment group codes (IGCs) and etiologic diagnosis codes
  • Discuss the implications of overcoding the etiologic diagnosis
  • Review etiologic diagnosis coding tips
  • Examine principal diagnosis coding on the UB-04

Session 3 (55 minutes):

  • Discuss the importance of accurately pairing the IGC and etiology
  • Discuss the implications of inaccurate IGC coding

Session 4 (35 minutes):

  • Define comorbid conditions for the IRF-PAI
  • Discuss tips for coding accuracy and financial implications
  • Discuss tier assignment for comorbid conditions
  • Define complications

Each module includes handouts, an instructional video, and post quizzes (passing grade is 80%). Modules must be completed in order. You must pass each module to progress through this course.

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Accurately code the IGC and the appropriate etiologic diagnosis pairing on the IRF-PAI.
  • Accurately code the comorbid conditions, query for tiers, and code complications on the IRF-PAI.
